Advice for Dental Emergencies

Toothache: It is important to seek treatment for a toothache, because it might indicate a serious infection. Use over-the-counter medications like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen to reduce discomfort. Floss and brush gently, and apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth.

Knocked-Out Tooth: If you knock out a permanent tooth, find the tooth and bring it to the office with you, if possible. You can store the tooth in cold milk, sterile saline, or back in its socket in the mouth. Natural teeth have the highest survival rate if they are restored within one hour of being knocked out.

Broken Tooth: Save the pieces of the tooth if possible in milk or saline. We may be able to restore the natural pieces of the tooth, or we may recommend a crown or filling.

Broken or Lost Dental Work: Do not attempt to replace your filling or crown with glue. You may be able to reattach your dental work temporarily with toothpaste or an over-the-counter dental cement.

Abscess: A dental abscess is a threatening infection that can spread through the rest of the body. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever and rinse the mouth with warm salt water. Signs of an abscess include a pimple-like bump on the gums, pain in the jaw or teeth, and chronic bad breath.
